The City Is Yours
Quirks & Curiosities
If you're driving, Berlin's layout can be disconcerting, thanks to numerous construction detours and one-way streets (einbahnstrasse). Germans drive on the right, and road signs give distances in kilometers. On street signs and maps, strasse (or straße) translates as "street," platz means "place," allee means "avenue," and gassee means "alley." Finding a parking place is confusing if you aren't aware of restrictions. If possible, it's best to explore Berlin via its efficient public transportation system.
