| Description:
GRANT PARK. Zoo Atlanta has become well-known for its natural habitats, for providing social structures similar to those found in the wild, and for breeding successes. Social animals, such as primates, live in larger family groups; more solitary animals, such as giant pandas, have individual exhibits. The zoo includes African, Asian, wetland, and rainforest exhibits, as well as a reptile house, an aviary, and several small animal exhibits. Other attractions include train and carousel rides, a children's playground, and rock climbing. Food kiosks, restaurants, and shops are located throughout the zoo. |

Atlanta is one of only three zoos in the USA that has Giant Pandas (Washington D.C. and San Diego are the other two). The exhibit is "large" because bears are large. Zoo membership is a good value if you frequent zoos. Membership also grants you free admission to 150 reciprocal zoos around the country. |

It used to be that when visitors mentioned going to the Atlanta Zoo, you cringed to think about them
seeing one of the worst eyesores in town. But, Dr. Terry Maple and his staff have turn that attitude
around. And in a big way! Today, this gem of zoo is a great place to take kids and learn more about
the incredible variety of wildlife in our world. The natural habitats and ongoing renovations make Zoo
Atlanta a great place to see and see again. Take a morning or afternoon and enjoy a wonderful
outing to one of the truly outstanding zoological parks in the United States. |

My advice concerning Zoo Atlanta: Don't go. It's small, mediocre, and rather dull...worth about a $5.00 admission, which makes their adult admission price of $17.12 (after tax) absolutely outrageous! The zoo's animal population: Standard African fare (lions, elephants, rhinos, etc.), gorillas, orangutans, a few other monkeys, giant pandas, red pandas, huge tortoises, reptiles, about a dozen bird species, two otters and not much else. What little land the zoo occupies is wasted largely on concessions, needlessly zigzagging walkways, and an absurdly huge layout surrounding the giant pandas, who are rare, but far from exciting.
If you're going to go anyway, save a long walk through Grant Park by parking in the west parking lot. To get there, go south on Boulevard and ignore the parking lot signs on your right. Keep going to Atlanta Ave. Turn right, then right again on Cherokee Ave, and enter the lots on your right. |
