We have been to Gettysburg every year for the past 5 years. We only eat at The Avenue. The staff has always been friendly, and the food is excellent. I would recommend the sweet potato french fries as a side dish.

The food and service were okay when I visited here earlier this week. However, I had an interesting, unique experience at this place: While reading the menu I discovered an item on the menu labeled "Liberty Toast". I asked the waitress what it was and she said it was French Toast. I asked her why it was called that and not French Toast. She SAID she didn't know. Apparently the woman wasn't very curious why a common food item had such an unclear name. I am not used to seeing a restaurant flaunt its political opinions in its menus. This can only be described as a good way to drive away potential customers.

My family has been going to the Avenue for Breakfast for many years but a recent experience lead to us stay clear of the place ever since. We noticed in June 2004 that they stopped serving real butter with their pancakes. At the same time, I also noticed that my eggs benedict had a hollandaise sauce that looked totally separated and disgusting (I guess they used margarine). When I suggested that they continue serving butter on request, the server said they absolutely would not. They said they would have to raise their prices "sky high" if they had to purchase the real thing. It's their attitude that really gets under my skin. Why sacrifice quality for the sake of a few cents a meal?
